A Guide to Meditation for Beginners

Meditation is the gateway to inner truth, spiritual awareness, and psionic clarity. For witches, mystics, and spiritual practitioners, meditation is not simply about calming the mind—it's about connecting with the subtle realms, attuning to sacred forces, and cultivating energetic mastery. Whether you're looking to communicate with deities, spirits, or simply reconnect with your higher self, meditation is a foundational discipline in your craft.

🪑 Fundamental Rules and Principles

To begin meditating effectively, one must completely disconnect from physical distractions. The body often resists stillness—itches, aches, numbness—but these are illusions. You must train yourself to ignore these sensations, allowing your awareness to rise above your physical shell. Over time, this act of self-discipline becomes second nature.

Choosing the Right Meditation Position

There is no single correct posture. The key is to maintain a straight spine, ensuring a clear energy flow through the body while avoiding positions that cause discomfort or sleepiness. Two highly recommended poses include:

  • The Chair Position: Sit upright in a sturdy chair, feet flat on the ground, shoulder-width apart. Keep your back straight but relaxed. Let your hands rest gently on your thighs, palms facing upward. Relax your toes and jaw.

  • The Lotus Position: A more traditional option, where you sit cross-legged on the floor with your back straight. Your hands rest loosely on your knees, palms open. This posture connects you deeply to the Earth and roots your energy.

It is best to avoid lying down, as it's easy to fall asleep. Always choose a position you can hold with minimal physical strain, especially for long sessions.

The Ideal Environment

While nature offers the most supportive energy for meditation, it’s not always available. Choose a quiet, undisturbed space with clean air and low lighting. Candlelight is perfect—it creates a gentle glow and evokes sacred space. You can also include soft, non-distracting instrumental music or binaural beats for brainwave entrainment. A touch of incense (preferably frankincense, sandalwood, or mugwort) can help shift your consciousness, but avoid heavy smoke.

🌀 Basic Meditation Practice

This is the foundation technique. It’s simple, effective, and suitable for daily use.

  1. Sit comfortably and close your eyes.

  2. Begin with deep breaths: inhale slowly through the nose, exhale gently through the mouth.

  3. Clear your thoughts—release any tension or inner chatter.

  4. Breathe naturally and simply observe. Let the mind wander through symbols and images, but avoid grabbing onto any one thought. Don’t analyse. Don’t judge.

The goal isn’t a completely blank mind. It’s about listening to the deeper layers of yourself and your environment.

Start with just 5 minutes, increasing by 1 minute with each session. Use a gentle alarm—no loud or jarring tones—to bring you back.Always record your experiences in a dedicated journal: What did you feel? What did you see? What emotions or visions emerged?

🌟 Meditation for Divine Connection

To communicate with a Deity, follow the same meditative steps until your mind is still. When you’re centred, begin visualising the Deity you wish to call upon.

  • See their form in vivid detail—their posture, clothing, colours, aura, symbols.

  • Sense their presence and energy entering your space.

  • Use a short personal mantra (e.g., their name or an invocation line) to enhance focus.

  • Keep your mental message brief and respectful. This is a moment of reverence, not demand.

When the encounter ends, record everything. These experiences are sacred and deeply personal. Share only if absolutely necessary—and always with discretion.

⚠️ Precaution is essential: Work within a cleansed, protected space. Cast a circle. Work on consecrated ground if possible. Without preparation, one might attract malevolent spirits instead of divine beings.

👁️ Meditation for Spirit Communication (Loved Ones)

Seeking to connect with a loved one who has passed is delicate and emotionally charged. This should only be attempted within 3 to 6 months after their passing.

Use the same method as with Deity meditation, but instead, visualise the person you wish to contact. Focus on their familiar features, energy, and presence. Speak to them briefly and from the heart.

⚠️ Take serious precautions. Just like with deity work, casting a protective circle is vital. Unwanted spirits can masquerade as familiar ones. Trust your intuition and protect your energy field.

🐾 Meeting Your Guardian Spirit Animal (Shamanic Tradition)

This powerful meditation helps identify and connect with your Spirit Animal, your guide in the astral realm.

  1. Enter a meditative state and imagine a dense, enchanted forest.

  2. Ahead of you stands a massive, ancient tree. At its roots, a dark opening calls you inward.

  3. Step into the tunnel and begin walking slowly. Take note of the textures, lights, and sounds.

  4. At the tunnel’s end is a mystical cave. Observe it. Do not enter.

  5. Watch for animals around the cave. Repeat this meditation three times. The animal that appears each time is your Spirit Guardian.

On your fourth journey, approach the animal. Embrace it, symbolising your reunion. This is now your sacred protector.

To return, retrace your steps back through the tunnel. Upon your return, honour your spirit animal by mimicking its movements in a rhythmic dance. This builds your bond.

⚠️ Do not reveal the name of your Spirit Animal or your astral name (which it may give you). These are sacred and must remain secret.

🕳️ The Technique of the Void

This advanced meditation guides the practitioner toward mental stillness and ultimate spiritual contact.

  1. Sit and relax as in the earlier meditations.

  2. Visualise a glowing circle of light forming clockwise around you.

  3. Each thought or distraction that arises is transformed into a physical object within the circle. Don’t resist them—externalise them.

  4. Begin removing these objects one by one, allowing the circle to empty.

Once the circle is clear, visualise it slowly fading away. Now there is nothing. Just pure mental emptiness—the Void.

This is not easy. If you can hold it for even 5 seconds, that is a spiritual breakthrough. In Zen:

  • 5 seconds = a divine touch

  • 10 seconds = a divine kiss

  • 20 seconds = a divine embrace

Practice often, and over time, your connection to higher consciousness will deepen immensely.
